Creating Killer RC Action Videos

Let’s start with some tips on making killer RC action videos.

1. Get low to the ground. RC vehicles look their best from a low angle where they look much more scale and exciting.
2. Closeups. Closeups. Closeups. Did I mention closeups? These are the shots that can bring your video to a whole new level, especially if you’re shooting from a low angle. Details are what people look for so give them as many as you can.
3. Use slooooow mooootion. Nothing adds drama to your action videos like a good slow motion clip. Couple that with a low, zoomed in shot and you’re well on your way to mastery. (see below for a note on slow motion)
4. Use only THE BEST footage. Sometimes even a few seconds can seem like a few minutes when the footage just isn’t that compelling. Always shoot as much footage as you can and edit down to only the good stuff. If it doesn’t totally excite you, it probably won’t hold the interest of your viewers. An awesome 30 second clip is much better than a boring 5 minute clip.
5. Use an on board camera. The GoPro camera is one of our favorite tools in the office for video because it gives such an interesting and unique perspective. At the very least, it will give you more options when editing your video.
6. Shoot as many different angles as possible. The more variety you have, the better!
7. Make the subject of your video interesting. Shoot in an awesome location, do a crazy RC stunt, give your vehicle a sick paint job, etc. The more unique and original your concept is, the more successful your video will be. Content is King!
8. Shoot in high definition. Most video cameras now have the option to film in HD. Use this feature whenever you can.
9. Add a vignette. A vignette is an effect that darkens the edges of your video and draws your attention to the center of your subject. This can also be really effective in slow motion clips.
10. Have fun! That’s what it’s all about. It will definitely show in your final product.

*NOTE* – When creating slow motion clips, use 75%, 50%, or 25% speed for best results.
