RETRO RE-RE – Basking In the Glory of Tamiya’s Latest Re-release, the Super Sabre (2023)

Longtime RCCA readers will know that we’re big fans of the Tamiya Boomerang, so it shouldn’t be surprising that were thrilled to hear that Tamiya has released its brother, Super Sabre. The two buggies are virtually twins, aside from different bodies and unique body and damper stay shapes. Both feature a shaft-driven 4WD driveline and rock a single front coilover shock and two in the rear.

Tamiya’s Super Sabre off-road buggy is a 1/10-scale assembly kit that brings back the nostalgia of the original model, which was released in 1987. The beginner-friendly off-roader manages to capture the essence of the ’80s while maintaining the charm of its original design. This updated “2023” version, as Tamiya calls it, features a pre-cut and pre-painted silver body and incorporates modern elements for an updated RC driving experience.

80’s Engineering
The Super Sabre boasts a reliable shaft-driven 4WD drivetrain and a four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension equipped with oil-filled CVA short dampers and a front stabilizer. This combination optimizes the performance of the four-wheel drive system, ensuring a smooth and controlled off-road experience.

Durability and simplified maintenance are priorities for Tamiya, evident in the ABS plastic bathtub frame and reinforced components. The front and rear gearboxes are sealed to keep dirt out, and the differentials enhance cornering capabilities. The kit includes a 540 brushed-type silver can motor and a Hobbywing ESC to offer a powerful and reliable powertrain.

The Super Sabre’s body comes pre-painted but requires stickers to be applied and the driver figure to be completed to finish off its box art look.

ASSEMBLY REQUIRED
The Super Sabre’s body is constructed from 0.7mm-thick polycarbonate, pre-painted in Tamiya’s metallic silver paint, and comes with a separate wing. We love its look. The pre-painted body adds a touch of convenience for hobbyists, while the inclusion of stickers and the option to paint a driver figure allow for personalized finishing touches.
Assembling the Super Sabre is a breeze, even for beginners, thanks to Tamiya’s user-friendly approach to kit design. To get this buggy ready for action, all you need is a two-channel radio, a steering servo and a 7.2-7.4-volt battery with a compatible charger.

TAKING A DRIVE
Driving the Super Sabre is like taking a trip down memory lane. The ’80s-era engineering may not make it a top contender on today’s RC racing circuits, but it undeniably brings outright fun to the track. The inherent joy of piloting this classic buggy is a testament to Tamiya’s commitment to reintroducing their classic RC vehicles.

Final Word
Blending a bit of nostalgia with contemporary performance, the Super Sabre is a timeless choice for enthusiasts who enjoy the pure fun of RC driving. As we navigate the track with this classic buggy, we’re reminded that sometimes the essence of a good time is rooted in the past.
