Reefs RC 300: IS Comp Spec Servo Winch

Features

The 300:IS is a high-voltage, brushless, low-profile internal spool-style servo winch from Reefs RC. This competition-spec servo winch is designed to take on the most demanding applications while remaining reliable, compact and consistent. The servo housing is made from CNC-machined aluminum and is weather-sealed with Reefs’ 6-point “submarine” waterproofing, meaning that the servo will still operate even when fully submerged in water. The servo winch’s internal spool design eliminates the need for a cumbersome external spool and keeps the overall footprint as compact as possible. The internal spool is coated to prevent corrosion and polished smooth to the touch for silky-smooth operation. The 300:IS case measures in at around 41mm in width by 20mm height and 30mm deep, allowing this servo to fit in most crawler applications.

Internally, the 300:IS comes outfitted with a high-voltage brushless motor that operates with an input power up to 8.4V. This motor provides a whopping 300 oz-in. of torque and speeds of up to 0.03s @ 8.4V. The speed can be controlled with Reefs’ built-in winch controller firmware and can also be adjusted with the optional Reefs Link USB programming application. The servo winch comes complete with a 6-foot synthetic winch line as well as a scale-appropriate recovery hook.

TESTING

As with other Reefs servos, the 300:IS is beautifully machined. The case is finished in a matte-black hard-anodized coating and features silver beveled edges for extra style. The servo’s overall feel is solid and gives the sensation of being truly high-quality. The internal spool is well-finished and smooth, which is perfect for keeping the winch line in good shape regardless of the amount of use it sees. The servo’s overall operation is smooth and easy as well, and only requires very simple setup to get going. As with other winch servos, simply plug the 300:IS into an auxiliary channel on your receiver, set up your radio buttons for operation, and you’re good to go. No extra steps, no special programming—it’s pretty much all just plug and play.

The 300:IS packs great performance into a compact design. The 300 oz-in. of torque is more than enough to recover a 1/10-scale rig and the servo itself operates flawlessly under stress. The included winch line and recovery hook are a nice added touch and help to give the winch a scale look on the trail. The internal spool windows are machined with great precision and the housing’s finish allows for extremely smooth operation, leaving no concerns about the winch line snagging or bunching up while in use. We found Reefs’ built-in servo controller firmware to be perfect for crawling applications and never needed to use the Reefs Link to make any adjustments. Of course, if you want to tinker with the settings, we’d still highly suggest grabbing a Reefs Link to do so, since it can be very handy and allows you to fully fine-tune your servo winch experience. As with many other Reefs products, we highly recommend the 300:IS. If you’re in the market for a high-performance compact servo winch, it’s definitely worth your attention.
