Pirate’s Treasure – Digging Deep into a Ground Up Custom Rock Pirates RC Crawler Build

California is known for its challenging types of terrain, and when it comes to conquering the rocks, the Rock Pirates RC family stands out as true experts. Their passion for the RC hobby led them to transform their knowledge into a thriving business that offers smart, high-quality, 100% USA-made products that can make anyone a better driver. With a focus on performance, ease of maintenance and upgrade simplicity, Rock Pirates RC is pushing the RC crawler industry forward.

As a dedicated Jeep aficionado, I was determined to construct a custom-built RC crawler centered around the JConcepts Creep body. Utilizing my leftover Vanquish F9 aluminum axles and a super OG Vanquish three-gear transmission, I set out to explore the capabilities of Rock Pirates’ components during my stay in California. After browsing their website, I promptly ordered a selection of parts that would serve as a solid foundation for my build.

THE FOUNDATION

Technically speaking, this crawler is based on the architecture of an Axial SCX10 II, but it actually doesn’t use parts from the SCX10 II. This Pirate’s Treasure is completely aftermarket—just how a pirate would like it, I bet. To lay the groundwork I started with the Rock Pirates Red Interceptor chassis and the Capra Flat Skid Plate, along with the brand’s accompanying Link Risers. These components provided a sturdy and reliable base for my crawler. In terms of suspension, I opted for the Pit Bull RC Gold officially licensed BDS Kronik 90mm shocks to ensure excellent performance on varied terrain.
Taking traction into account, the Rock Pirates experience led me to choose Pro-Line BFG Krawler tires, which are known for their exceptional grip. To enhance their performance further, I paired them with Pro-Line’s dual-stage foams, which provided the ideal combination of scale looks and reliable handling. These tires were mounted on Vanquish’s 1.9 105 Method wheels with black-and-gold IFR rings, adding a touch of style to my crawler’s appearance. To achieve a perfectly balanced rig, I incorporated Benedict Harry brass front wheel weights sourced from Amazon.

POWER SYSTEM

When it came to electronics, Castle Creations proved to be the go-to brand for rock crawler power systems. I selected the Castle Mamba Micro X2 ESC, known for its compact size and feature-packed design. It’s paired with the Castle Creations 1900kV Slate sensored brushless motor, and this combination delivered impressive performance and power. To ensure reliable steering, I opted for the Reefs Triple 8 16.8V direct-power steering servo, renowned for its smooth operation.
Throughout the build, the Rock Pirates family provided an array of essential components that made a significant difference. I incorporated their Rock Pirates Flat Rail Crossmembers, Servo and Shock Spacer pack, Pro-Line Power Wagon Sliders, and Red Hardline Bed. These additions not only enhanced the durability of my crawler but also added a touch of visual appeal.

LOOKS MATTER

In collaboration with Robert Pezza from Scale Rat, I decided on a custom paint scheme for the JConcepts Creep Cab body. Robert’s expertise shone through as he meticulously painted and finished the body, incorporating a 3D-printed grille and lights. The end result was stunning, with a realistic appearance that exceeded my expectations. Inside the cab, the custom-printed and detailed dashboard and steering wheel added a level of authenticity to the overall design.

To complete the build, I utilized various additional components such as the Rock Pirates X Mount spare tire carrier, which came with a matching Vanquish spare. I also incorporated a Rock Pirates Mini Battery Tray “Plank” and utilized a Gens Ace/Tattu 850mAh 4S battery with an XT60 Extra JST plug for direct power to the servo. The Spektrum SR315 receiver ensured reliable and precise control over my crawler’s movements.

With the combination of the Vanquish OG three-gear transmission case, Vanquish Incision steel driveshafts and Axial Capra links, my crawler boasted a robust driveline capable of handling the toughest terrain. The RC Screws gold hardware and spacers added a touch of style to the overall aesthetics and complement the gold accents present in other components.

ON THE ROCKS

Thanks to some minor shock oil adjustments, specifically Pit Bull silicone 65wt, this crawler proved to be exceptionally capable on rocky terrain, allowing me to navigate with ease. In no time I found myself improving as a driver, adapting to a terrain vastly different from the familiar Georgia clay.
