Onsite Coverage Of The Byron Onroad Challenge

Radio Control Car Action’s Eric Schutt checks in from the 2011 Byron Onroad Challenge in Joliet, Illinois.

The crew from Byron Fuels continues to lead the charge by assembling one of the best, most unique events for the onroad set.  The Byron Challenge does a great job of promoting a fun, casual atmosphere combined with stellar racing action.  This year is no different.  It continues to draw some of the fastest racers from across the country, Canada, and even China!  Mix in of some of the best Midwest talent, and you have the Byron Challenge.

Representation is fairly equal with three heats of GT class, four heats of 1:10 sedan, and three heats of 1:8 totaling 90 entries.  Racers began showing up Friday, but racing action began Saturday AM with practice followed by three rounds of qualifying.  This event is run using Qualifying Points style, with each heat ten minutes long.  Saturday afternoon, rain rolled in and cut some of the third round of qualifying short, but Sunday will begin with final rounds of qualifying followed by the mains.

Props to Leisure Hours Raceway for continuing to operate a killer facility!  Their track is one of the best in the country, and the pits and shop are top notch.  Other shout outs: Byron Fuel, RC America, XRay, and Serpent for sponsoring the Byron Onroad Challenge!
