HPI’s Savage just got another steroid boost with the latest XL version, which stretches the wheelbase, plumps up the tires, and increases displacement compared to the previous Savage X model. The XL gets a new 5.9cc (.36ci) engine, and everything you need to fire up the big mill is in the box–including the Roto-Start engine-cranker, a stick pack to power it, glow plug heater, fuel bottle and even a rechargeable receiver pack. Pick up a jug of fuel, and you’re good to go. The truck itself includes many new features to go along with its stretched chassis, including reinforced all-metal diffs (housings are metal too), extra-thick steel driveshafts, a steel spur gear, and extended axles for the huge 170mm Terra Pin tires.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Length: 23 in. (585mm)
Height: 10.43in. (265mm)
Width: 17.52in. (445mm)
Wheelbase: 15.55in. (395mm)
Long, tall, and wide–“XL” definitely applies.
Here’s the XL compared to the current Savage X. Yeah, it’s big.
Like the graphic says, all you need is fuel. that, and maybe a C-cell for the glow plug heater. Nice to see a spare plug and a rechargeable receiver pack in there.
The polished pipe and header look luxe, and etched logos on the gunmetal side plates are nice touches. No one does ladder chassis quite as nicely as HPI.
The K5.9 engine is shaft-started and equipped with an aluminum-shoe clutch. Looks stout.
