|Rain Ends World Championship Early|
Major races such as IFMAR World Championships are difficult to pull off without delay, and the recent 1/8-scale on-road worlds held in Miami, Florida had numerous delays before the start of main event. This wasn’t due to a lack of organization or similar problems. In contrast, competitors are allowed to request a 10-minute “timeout” before their race. Only one is issued for each main and the driver calling for the timeout must start at the back of the field. Normally these fairly common delays only set the program back, but they had an arguably profound impact on the outcome of this championship as three out of the four mains preceding the A-main had timeouts. This cumulatively caused a significant delay in the starting of the race. With the main event being an hour long, numerous pit stops for fuel and fresh tires are required and as such, strategy plays an important role in the outcome. Dario Balestri of Italy was on pace to potentially win the championship when the race was ended 13 minutes early due to rain. Had the race gone the full duration, Balestri as well as second place finisher Keisuke Fukuda of Japan, Takaaki Shimo of Japan and Atsushi Hara of Japan all would have been in position to challenge winner Robert Pietsch of Germany. Balestri finished third, but looked to be the fastest competitor during the race. No one will ever know what would have happened if the race had run for the full scheduled hour of racing, but it is certain that had the timeouts not been called, there would have been plenty of time for the full race to be run.
