SoCal Hobbies Gets The Mini Z Race Started In Your Own Home

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to race an RC track in the comfort of your own home? How about bringing an RC track with you everywhere you go? Our friends at SoCal Hobbies showed us how to do just that with the help of Kyosho’s line of 1/24-scale Mini Z RC cars and a track made by RCP Tracks.

Kyosho Mini Z RCs come in many different styles, including on-road racers, off-road trucks and even racing buggies. These pint-sized vehicles are known for their incredibly accurate scale looks and their hop-up potential. The upgrade market is robust and the racing is fierce, especially for the on-road segment.

Due to their smaller 1/24 scale, it’s easy to see why Mini Zs are the preferred RC to race where space is limited. Try getting a 1/10-scale on-road up to speed in your garage or on your driveway. That’s not happening for the majority of us. With a 1/24-scale Mini Z racecar, however, creating a full racecourse where you can go flat-out is completely within reach.

SoCal Hobbies recently showed us a portable track made by RCP that brings regulation Mini Z racing anywhere you transport it. Made of dense foam panels, the track is pieced together like a large jigsaw puzzle. The smooth surface it provides is perfect for on-road Mini Z racing. Starter tracks are available in both 30cm- and 50cm-wide lanes. The 30cm track has a footprint of about 8 feet by 12 feet, while the 50cm track measures about 20 feet by 13 feet. The 30mm is great for home races, but if you have space for the 50cm-wide version you’re in for some serious racing action. It’s worth noting that 50cm-wide tracks are used in competitive-level Mini Z racing.

Best of all, since the track is modular it can be expanded to create larger tracks and an infinite number of layouts with optional expansion kits. What’s more, special pieces such as chicanes and 45-degree turns are also available to make your track even more fun to drive. The entire track breaks down to store in a box that’s roughly the size of a coffee table, which can be easily transported in the back of a SUV or hatchback.

SoCal Hobbies stocks all of RCP’s tracks and components along with an extensive list of Kyosho Mini Z vehicles and aftermarket upgrades. If you’re looking for RC action in your own backyard, you’ll want to check this Mini Z setup out.
