Sand Rustler Buggy [READER’S RIDE]

A lot of Scott Lempert’s projects are custom scale builds and we’ve shown plenty of them in Reader’s Rides, but he also builds vehicles just for fun. When he decided he wanted something for playing in the sand, he wasn’t going just grab something off the rack. Instead, he scratch-built a sand buggy frame out of 3/16-inch steel rod and bolted to a 1/8-inch thick 6160 aluminum plate. Mounted to that frame is the suspension and running gear from a Traxxas Rustler. To work in the sand he mounted a set of Traxxas 2.8 paddle tires out back, with a pair of Pro-Line Mohawk 2.8 tires on Rustler wheels that were tinted to match the rears. Since the interior is now visible, he installed a set of gauges from Exclusive RC, plus a set of Axial chassis-mounted LED spot lights. For power Scott chose an HPI 3900kv brushless system; for steering he chose a Savox servo.
