This Axial SCX10 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which Ben Gifford, of Rock Island, IL calls the “Budget Buildicon,” is proof that you don’t need to spend a ton of money in upgrades to make a great rock crawler. All you need is a solid platform, an eye for the right upgrades, and some great camera skills to make it into Readers’ Rides. Ben’s rig sports Axial upgrades like front CV axles, heavy-duty front and rear diff gears, and Axial’s basic light controller for the bumper lights and high-output controller for the lightbar, Axial headlights and tail lights. To get good footing on the rocks, Ben ditched the stock foam inserts in favor of custom super-soft foams. The “Budget Buildicon” gets power from a Tekin FxR speed controller and 45T motor for plenty of torque. A Spektrum DX4C radio system gives Ben excellent control of his truck, so no Midwestern terrain is too much to handle.
