Sunday I headed over to the HobbyTown USA HobbyPlex in Omaha, NE for the final day of tour stop #5 of the 2012 Short Course Showdown Nationwide Tour.  This is the second year of this unique series which features traditional stock and modified classes, plus three spec classes.  Traxxas sponsored a 2WD Slash and 4×4 Slash spec class where all entries consisted of Traxxas 2WD and 4×4 Slashes.  Losi also sponsored a SCB (Short Course Buggy) spec class which consisted entirely of Losi SCBs.  This new vehicle class was added to the tour for 2012 after it debuted as an exhibition class last year.

That morning there was one more round of qualifying and then a short break before all the mains.  Since they were using a rocket round qualifying format many TQs from the previous rounds on Saturday fell as the track got faster for racers.  The most competitive classes that weekend were the Stock 2WD, Modified 2WD, and Modified 4X4 short course truck classes.  After all the dust had settled JConcepts / Team Associated driver Dave Duncan came away with the top qualifier spot in the Stock 2WD class.

Team Losi Racing dominated qualifying in the modified classes as local hero Alex Sturgeon was the top qualifier in Modified 2WD, and Arizona native Billy Fischer secured the top position in the Modified 4X4 class.

After qualifying had concluded it was time for the racer door prizes, and thanks to the many great sponsors the racers walked away with a ton of great gear!  Once your ticket number was called you got to pick one item of your choice from the table, but you only have 5 seconds to decide.

When young novice drivers had their ticket number called, it was like watching an episode of The Price Is Right as the crowd cheered them on to choose the Traxxas T-Maxx pillow over the $350 2.4Ghz radio system.  🙂

Sunday was also a special day for Team Associated young gun Jason Hills as he celebrated his 11th birthday.  Racers were treated to free birthday cake in honor of Jason, and since they just walked away with some great door prizes, this truly was the icing on the cake!

Next they held the 1st spectator raffle of the day.  This is an unique feature of this tour since they give away door prizes to spectators too.   One of the main goals of the Short Course Showdown is to help bring new people into the hobby and what a better way than to hook them up with a free RTR short course truck!

This lucky spectator walked away with a nice Team Associated RTR SC10RS.

Many manufacturers were in attendance with product displays like Traxxas, Horizon Hobby, JConcepts, and Novak so I stopped to check out the latest gear.

At the Traxxas booth Factory drivers were running their new red anodized upgrades for the Slash 4×4.  Previously only offered in blue these new option parts are made from 6061-T6 aluminum and add custom style while increasing the durability of your truck.  Read more about these new upgrades here:×4-stampede-4×4-summit-and-revo-models/

Next at the Novak booth I spotted their new Impact brushless speed control.  This new ESC has an extremely small footprint and is equipped with Novak’s new Super Tuner interface which allows you to fine tune your speedo without the need for an external device like a laptop or programming card.  Read more about it here:

We started up the mains and with 132 entries it was a great day of racing.  The top 2 finishers in the lower mains bumped up into the next main, and each A Main was 7 minutes long expect for the Novice class which was only 4 minutes.  Before they ran each Traxxas Spec A Main there was a special drawing for all the A Main finalists of their respective classes.  One lucky driver from the 2WD Slash top 10 won a Traxxas Greg Adler Edition Slash XVL, and in the Slash 4×4 group one racer won a Traxxas Jerry Whelchel Edition Slash 4×4.

There were some great battles on the track and we saw some intense racing since drivers only had one shot at bringing home the hardware in the A Mains.  The top 3 from each class are listed below this race report.

After all the mains had concluded they held one last spectator raffle that day.  One lucky person walked away with a Losi RTR TEN-SCTE, and the other a Traxxas RTR Kyle Busch Slash.

After that all the awards were handed out bringing an end to another successful showdown.  Next stop on the tour is September 14th-16th at 702 Raceway in Las Vegas, NV.  For more info please visit
