LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL – Having a Blast With Tamiya’s All-New GF-02 Squash Van

Tamiya, a brand beloved by RC enthusiasts worldwide, has rolled out its latest original creation—the Squash Van. Looking like a mild-mannered Midnight Pumpkin, this big-tired “monster SUV” is inspired by the classic 1950s American panel vans. This isn’t your ordinary run-of-the-mill RC, as we shall see in this article. Get ready for a dose of nostalgia served up with a side of fun, as Tamiya unveils the Squash Van on its gear-driven 4WD GF-02 chassis.

Squash Van looks like Midnight Pumpkin’s more civilized sibling, but it’s just as fun to drive as its famed predecessor.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST
Channeling the spirit of vintage American panel vans, the Squash Van boasts a polycarbonate body that’s not just for show. It sits proudly atop the all-new GF-02 chassis, a variant of Tamiya’s comically inclined GF-01. While its predecessor flaunted a comical design, the GF-02 takes a more serious stance with a realistic wheelbase and a frame adorned with ladder and pipe motifs.

All-New GF-02 Chassis
Beneath the Squash Van’s fun exterior lies the gear-driven 4WD GF-02 chassis, a mechanical masterpiece that places the motor in a low, central position within a lightweight, durable monocoque frame.

Power is efficiently transmitted to both front and rear wheels via gears, ensuring stable off-road performance thanks to the long wheelbase and wide tread setup. The slim frame, showcasing ladder and pipe motifs, incorporates sealed gearboxes to fend off pesky off-road debris such as pebbles, grass and dried leaves. Front and rear gear differentials enable smooth cornering, and customizable pinion gears provide an option for three types of gear ratios. For those off-road excursions, a motor guard ensures reliability.

Assembly Kit
The Squash Van isn’t just about looks; it’s engineered for thrills. Tamiya has equipped this assembly kit with monster-truck-style V-Block pattern block tires, ready to conquer any terrain. If you’re craving extra maneuverability, the chassis is 4WS (four-wheel steering) compatible with a separately sold third-party 4WS function radio.

The body post position mirrors the long-wheelbase CC-02 chassis, offering the versatility to use long-wheelbase CC-02 bodies. With a 540 brushed-type motor and included Hobbywing brushed ESC, this van is geared for excitement. As mentioned, this van does require assembly, but we believe it’s an easy task, even for first-time vehicle builders.

Final Word
Tamiya’s Squash Van is a fun fusion of retro vibes and cutting-edge RC tech. It’s not just a model; it’s the embodiment of RC fun with a 1950s look. Whether you’re popping wheelies on the driveway or displaying it proudly on your shelf, the Squash Van is sure to put a smile on your face. Get ready to unleash the Squash Van and let the good times roll!
