Hot Commodity – Spotlight On WPL RC’s D12 Kei Truck

One of the most unexpectedly popular RC vehicles to pop up all over social media and the web in recent times has got to be WPL RC’s D12 Kei Truck. If you frequent Instagram and RC blogs, you’ll know what we mean. If you haven’t seen them yet, allow us to make an introduction.

Real life kei trucks are lightweight utility trucks that hail from Japan. They are ubiquitous on the urban and rural streets of Japan and are adored by their users for their utility above all else. To many however, their uniquely cute look is also a plus.

The good folks at niche RC maker WPL RC have created a simple, low cost way to own a kei truck of your own with their 1/10-scale creation, the D12. The RTR truck looks to be a scale recreation of a Suzuki Carry kei truck and comes with everything you need to get driving including a radio transmitter, 2S 500mAh Li-Ion battery and charger. What’s incredible about the D12 is its price; the manufacturer has it listed for just under $60. We’re intrigued.

The best parts about the D12 are the ways enthusiasts are modifying the truck. Many 3D printing creators are making scale detail parts to turn the generic body into a fully scale detailed version of a Suzuki Carry or any other number of kei truck makes and models. Even better than that, we’ve seen wide body kits, fender flares and more that turn the cute little truck into a mean street fighting drift or GT racing truck. It seems the sky’s the limit for this affordable fun truck.

We’re excited to get our hands on one to see what we can do with it. You’ll also be inspired when you take a look online to see how the kei truck has been transformed by fellow WPL D12 enthusiasts.
