Has Short Course Replaced the Stadium Truck Class?

Just when I thought the answer was an obvious yes, some guys have been showing up with stadium trucks at my local track and it appears TLR will be releasing a stadium truck version of the 22. So, which is it? Has the stadium truck class been replaced or not? I personally think there’s no need for short course and stadium trucks, but what say you?

  1. I really think SC should be setup for diffrent tracks than traditional RC off-Road. With Losi also releasing a SC Buggy.

    SC is typcially more contact, and higher outside sidewalls, it’d be awesome to see more tracks with a looser surface where the tires dig in a bit, and jumps that allow the trucks to jump without sending them so vertical (which would also improve their lap times)

    ST and Buggy are obviously more nimble, largely due to aerodynamics and weight position, They also can fly better than SC vehicles, why they do so much better on RC tracks that are built like BMX tracks.

    This is why I’d like to see the SC have their own style tracks, instead of having to fit into the mold of the other off-road classes. Real SC racing is all about throwing dirt, rubbing fenders and the like… which is what these trucks excel at in full size, why not have the RC versions doing the same?

    I myself am not fond of the hard packed clay tracks… it’s like running on asphalt with jumps… shouldn’t off road (espcially SC) offer something more?

  2. I’ve been racing since 1988, and really I never understood the draw to Stadium Truck…

    There really is no real world counterpart for ST, and for the most part are really easy to drive with their wide and low stance. To me they always looked goofy. Have you ever seen a full size truck with 600mm wide tires that wasn’t a monster truck?

    Short Course trucks fun and popular for the same reason spec racing classes are fun and popular.

    Spec classes keep the overall cost down. Everyone has to deal with the same tires, the same limitations. It becomes more about the driver then it does the truck.

    Short Course in particular is interesting because it’s usually the only class where I see people laughing and having a good time (most of the time).

    I’m not saying that SC should replace ST.. I mean after all people race some very odd things (bar stool, Lawn Tractors, Belt Sanders). What ever floats your boat.

  3. I have had both trucks many times over. In my nearly 27 yrs of RC racing, I had 6 different Stadium trucks and 3 short course, and presently own a Losi XX-T Modified and lower to run Dirt Oval. but my local track has now pretty much band the ST on their Oval. Which was a prominent class the last 3 years. Tne short course truck is unique in it’s own rights, large and driver friendly really not that hard to handle.. But when driving a ST its so much different and allot more sweeter. I truly hope both trucks hang around for a long time to come

  4. Look at a real life stadium off-road race truck from 1990-1994 (when the stadium truck RC class started), and look at a modern day short course off-road truck. They are the same style truck doing the same style racing. In my opinion, SC racing is what the stadium truck class should have always been – the current (and even original) stadium truck class has no real-life equivalent and let’s not forget that when the first stadium trucks came out, they were considered “Monster Trucks” and ran in the monster truck class . . . . . . kind of like the story of the truggy in 2003-2005.

    SC racing is where it’s at – more challenging to drive, more realistic, more fun!

  5. ST trucks are very fun, not hard to set up, very cheap compared to short course, and still in demand at my local oval. everyone wants to revive the class, its just taking some time. ST’s are definetily in my top 3 behind sprint cars ahead of monster trucks, its just a great class. period.

  6. I had the RC10T kit with bushings, then the xx losi, xxt, xxt cr g plus, rc10t3, 2 xxxt, then finally 2 rc10t4. Is logical sooner or later losi will release a stadium truck based on the 22.

    I have a lot of respect for people that run short courses, but for me i started with stadium trucks. Also i still have magazines from the 90´s with old ads from ae.

    Also i have the box from traxxas (the nitro hawk box).

    Last words i love st, because i change the video games for rc and never look behind.

  7. I agree with atarit3 and nitsua eloc. I cut my teeth as well with my RC10T (which I still have and race in the 2wd stock SC class at my track) The track, and all tracks in my area, used to run ST but now has dropped it in favor of SC. I love the ST and I learned just fine with it and still love it over SC. STs handle better and respond better IMO and require a bit more understanding of setups. Me being a nerdy engineer, ST fit my personality. As long as you keep it stock, 2wd is a great learning tool.

    But I guess as the sport grows/shifts newer members are just looking for pure fun rather than sport these days. ST can’t give them that hype due SC scale similarities. It is really kool when you think about it, “I’m racing a scale replica of the Lucus Oil Trucks! Look at that thing go!” As for the sportsman, “Man that truck looks dialed in! Look at it carve those turns and leap over those doubles!” To each their own. IMO SC has replaced ST. The chassis even show it. Many are based of of 2wd ST.

  8. Stadium class is more of a purist sport, with SC being the big cheese now. Kinda like when henry ford got his Model T on the roads; horses went from being the main stream to taking a back seat, with the true die-hards still riding them. It will become a smaller, more modeler-savy group. I acutally plan on taking my RC10T out for use during this summer when racing isn’t so heavy, just for the fact that every time I drive it I remember why I got into the hobby to begin with.

  9. i think no. here’s why, at my local track a bunch of newbies (myself included) showed up with short course trucks. nearly all the racers were short course racers. Finally stadium and buggy guys started coming out, and runnin really fast laps. Lot of the newbies saw this at the first class to graduate to, after driving short course. However, i don’t think the scale realism and ease of short course will declinine the number of new racers/enthusiast like that stadium/buggy. the buggy/stadium class is great, but it’s too great, too tuned, too much for your average newbie. i think there is room for both, but short course really captivated a dying genre in rc, 2wd electric

    1. Wow, this post really sums it up well. We need short course because it’s cool, fun, cheaper and easier for new comers as well as those that just like it. ST and buggies are great too and if racers aspire to advancing to either then that’s cool.

      Maybe the issue has more to do with well run club events. If 10 racers show up with stadium trucks then obviously let em race. If everyone has ST then there you go. Whatever paying customers want in your local area then cater to them.

  10. Personally, I prefer the ST over SC class, fewer limits and rules. The trucks are mostly cheaper and better for true racing, not that SC can’t race. but there are so many rules on appearance and limits on tires , there is no gray area for progression. For example, In the state of Georgia, A truck must be “Born an SC”. meaning by agreement of all tracks in the state, You Can’t take an ST and make it an SC, even if the SC is based on that ST (example, T4 to sc10= no no). I found this out When i suggested building a Slash out of parts of a SRT, Started a near flame war between me and the other racers

    I cut my racing teeth on ST, so i may be biased, sorry

  11. ya know what absolutely yes, why would they. but i guess its the mfg’s and media who have pushed sc this far since it aint about the performance (more accurately, less) and believe you me in a few years we’ll be right back at square 1, the bodies will be tucked closer to the chassis, the tires will get wider and yull see those “wing-ets” turn into a full on tail spoiler.

    and the fact is you still have tons of clubs/tracks running st classes, especially oval where it has stayed a solid chassis styling classes for

    if stadium trucks die itll be because the clubs, the industry (rcca included) roar and ifmar choose to ignore it and refuse to support the class. not because there is no interest.

  12. Depending on the situation, it wouldn’t be hard to revive the ST class. I let a veteran racer run his ST in the SC class as a reminder to the veteran SC guys (many former ST racers year ago) that the ST is more nimble, handles the bumps a little better and isn’t effected by the wind on the jumps nearly as much.

    Besides the fact that the ST racer finished in first by about a 1.5 laps, the wind factor had more than few guys thinking that ST might not be a bad class to run. I’ve thought about bringing in a few of the Losi SCBs based on the wind factor in an effort to get that class going too.

  13. stadium trucks never took off at my track, however I have a Losi XX-T which I got as a display piece. hopefully, I want to doant it somewhere prominant someday

  14. I think there is still a need for both classes. The reason I say this is because they are two different types of racing. By that I mean Short Course racing is rough and aggressive, you bump each other and its accepted as the way Short Course racing is. With the Stadium Truck class it is more of a precision driving class with almost the same etiquette as buggy racing. Obviously not as much as the buggies, but still more then a Short Course truck.

  15. i think they need both we run both clases aqt my local track and they are 2 totaly different trucks, they drive and handle totaly different so i say yes we need both of them and i am loooking forward to the TLR stadim truck
