Dreams of Rally’s World GT: Building Team Corally’s SSX-10 Pan Car

I’ve never personally ventured too far into the pan car realm before, but I’ve always had a love for them. Something about the kits looking so streamline, very Le Mans, very prototype racer. That type of racing is one of my favorites, oh and GT racing of course. I’ve always dreamt of building a pan car prototype racer, or some kind of GT look.

As luck happens, Team Corally pitched the idea of reviewing their SSX-10 1/10 WGT chassis, and when it came time to do some research, I was pleasantly surprised to find that World GT pan car racing is still alive and well in the RC world. So, I finally get to see my RC World GT dreams come to fruition.

This time around we decided to do something a little different with our review structure. We wanted to get a little more in depth, take a little more time and flesh out the car. Join us on the journey of building an RC WGT racer, with the first installment taking an in-depth look at Team Corally’s SSX-10 WGT chassis kit.

Getting Started

What’s in the box?

The first thing I noticed when I received the SSX-10 kit was just how nice and neat everything was packaged. Corally didn’t just throw a bunch of parts bags in a box and call it a day, they took the extra step and included all the small parts in six different segmented parts boxes. I really like this added touch, since these boxes will be a nice addition to my collection and will help to carry around the option parts for the SSX-10. On top of the parts boxes, Corally also included a neoprene pit mat, which I used while building the chassis. I may as well test everything right? The chassis and carbon components are kept in their own box, each piece sealed in its own bag to keep it from damage during the time it spends in transit and on the hobby shop shelf.

THE BUILD

Corally starts the SSX-10 build off in the right direction by supplying some quality parts and hardware. Every piece of this kit feels very well machined and finished. I always enjoy a good kit build, and this one was a joy. The instruction manual is clearly labeled, with 3D rendered illustrations that leave nothing to chance. They even went to the extent to include a screw guide on the bottom left page of each section, denoting the types of screws included, and also include a handy 20mm ruler at the top of each page to help verify screw lengths.

All the hardware is sorted neatly into the included parts boxes, so finding your way around to the next step is made simple. As you’d expect from a kit on this level, all the pieces fit together nicely, with no need for modification. Some trimming of the links and drilling of the servo horn are required, but those are minimal steps. Team Corally even includes a Kimbrough Racing Products servo horn, which is a nice touch. They do only include a 25T option though, so if your servo is splined for anything else, you’ll need to pick up another one. I will also mention that a lot of WGT pan chassis designs do feature a foam front bumper these days, which the SSX-10 does not have. This isn’t really a deal breaker for me though, as aftermarket options are available.

TUNING MADE EASY

Corally engineered the SSX-10 to be a capable and easily tunable car. They offer a simple line of option parts including different rate springs for the center shock, front arms, and rear pod, as well as various heights of front arm blocks. The battery stop can be mounted in 3 different locations to accommodate different size battery packs. The adjustable rear ball diff can also be tuned with optional ceramic diff balls. Camber is tuned with adjustable links. Caster is adjusted with the included caster chips, which may be my only real complaint with the tuning parts as they aren’t labeled for thickness and required use of a precision caliper to sort them out.

Beyond those parts the only other tuning options are shock and damper rod oil weight, Overall, the SSX-10 features a very minimalistic tuning approach. This is actually a good thing. Team Corally’s goal with simple tuning is based on the idea of spending more time driving and not as much time in the pits. A very refreshing mindset.

FINAL WORD

Team Corally’s SSX-10 is solid kit and I can’t wait to get this car out on the track. We plan to deck this kit out with some primo parts so keep an eye out for future installments of our WGT build in an upcoming issue of RCCA!
