Inside John Schultz’s desert-prepped Losi 5IVE-T

It was hot; after all, we were less than an hour from a city where the most famous landmark is “the world’s largest thermometer” – it wasn’t built that big to measure moderate temperatures. I wondered if the combination of that morning’s long drive, the obviously-not-coastal heat, and the square miles of uninterrupted sand were responsible for what I could have sworn was a moving mirage with a huge trail of sand-settling behind it- What IS that thing? I snapped out of it when I heard the pipey snarl of what sounded like a small motocross bike break the otherwise peaceful silence of the barren desert. That snarl was coming from a 40-pound, three-foot-long machine that was barreling across the desert at an alarming rate. And it was awesome.
