Classic Altered Chevy Drag Car [READER’S RIDE]

Classic Altered Chevy Drag Car [READER’S RIDE]

Here’s a piece of custom-built drag racing history from Scott Lempert. Right before Funny Cars came on the scene in the 1960s several altered-wheelbase FX (factory-experimental) cars toured the match-race circuit. One such, built by race header king Doug Thorley, was the “Chevy 2 Much” — so named because it was based on a 1963 Chevy II Nova sedan. Scott fabricated the styrene body and the beam front axle with leaf spring to look and work like the real thing — which used a gasser-style solid front axle. The frame uses SCX10 frame rails and power comes from a Team Associated Radon motor with a Hobby Wing speed control. The rear diff is a Tamiya locked spool, the tires are off a Traxxas funny car mounted on HPI vintage-series wheels, and there is a fully detailed scale interior too with an LED backlit dash. There’s also an opening trunk with a racing fuel cell. Scott fabricated his own styrene big-block V8 with fender-well headers and fuel injection stacks.
