Celebration of Mike Reedy’s Life: RC Superstars, Stories and Racing

Mike Reedy, an RC icon and the hobby’s most recognizable motor-man, passed away recently and left countless RC friends mourning his passing.  Yet, Mike did not want a memorial or funeral in his honor; rather, Mr. Reedy wanted a party.

So, yesterday at West Coast R/C in La Mirada, California, over a hundred of Mike’s friends gathered to celebrate Mike’s life exactly the way Mike wanted it–at a racetrack, with fun and competitive racing for everyone in attendance in true Reedy Race fashion.

The party was both emotional and hilarious, with Master of Ceremonies Cliff Lett telling the first of many stories over the track’s loud-speaker about Mike Reedy and his effect on the RC industry.  Associated’s Gene Hustings assembled a moving photo slide-show, while others told stories about Mr. Reedy at and away from the track.  Notables like Mark Pavidis, Scott Hughes, Jay Halsey, Barry Baker and Bob Novak and many others spoke of how Mike had influenced their lives as a mentor and as a friend.  The mood swung seamlessly from laughter to tears and back to laughter again as stories of Mr. Reedy were shared for nearly an hour.

After the speeches, the program moved directly into racing, with classes divided up into “Former IFMAR World Champs,” racers from the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s, and even a couples race where one person steered and one controlled the throttle.  It was all smiles and laughter the entire afternoon.

We were honored to be  invited to the event, and all of us at Air Age Media and Radio Control Car Action send our best to the Reedy family.
