40 YEARS IN THE MAKING – Axial x Pro-Line SCX10 III Special Edition 1982 Chevy K-10 4WD RTR

Like you, we’re excited anytime a new RC kit is released, even if it’s a derivative of a vehicle that we may already own. Whether a new ready to run (RTR) kit includes a never before released performance feature or even simply a new body, we’re interested just the same. What can we say? We love new kits! Our excitement goes double for Axial’s latest SCX10 III release, which is a special collaboration with Pro-Line Racing in celebration of the brand’s 40th anniversary. Before you say, “Oh, it’s just another SCX10 III,” let us show you it’s so much more than that.

40 YEARS IN THE MAKING - Axial x Pro-Line SCX10 III Special Edition 1982 Chevy K-10 4WD RTR

Pro-Line took Axial’s most popular crawler yet and gave it the full Pro-Line treatment. This special-edition crawler comes with many of the Pro-Line upgrades that we would add to the truck anyway and is just one of the reasons why we’re really excited about this release. Included in this limited-run kit are a great-looking, pre-painted 1982 Chevrolet K10 body and Big Bore Scaler Shocks all made by Pro-Line. That’s not all; there are more Pro-Line goodies onboard this ride, but we’ll get into the upgrades in detail a little later on.

1982

First, we’d like to point out that there’s a very specific reason why Pro-Line chose to include a 1982 Chevrolet K10 body with this special SCX10 III release. The body depicts the Chevy truck from the very year of Pro-Line’s founding, 1982. Those who have grown up with the RC hobby probably can’t remember a time that Pro-Line wasn’t around, and we’re even willing to bet many of our readers hadn’t even been born yet. That’s how long Pro-Line has been leading the RC hobby. Impressive, if you ask us.

This Axial x Pro-Line 40th Anniversary collab began life in Axial’s factory as the Basecamp version of the SCX10 III, which is to say that it started out as what enthusiasts consider as a “base model” of Axial’s popular crawler. You won’t find the standard SC10 III model’s DIG function and two-speed transmission in this rig.

Instead, this crawler features Axial’s proven LCXU single-speed transmission. The rig’s 5-gear single-speed transmission’s low center of gravity helps it stick to the trails and offers increased balance and stability. The stiffness of the truck’s steel C-channel chassis reduces frame flexing and increases the precision of suspension movement. The K10 comes with high-clearance portal axles and includes a full set of ball bearings, as well as all-metal internal gears that give the transmission increased strength and durability. The pickup’s optimized suspension includes all-metal links for the 4-link rear and front 3-link panhard setup.

A cool Pro-Line 40 Year logo is lasered onto the K10’s transmission plate. Each plate is individually numbered too, making it a true collector’s piece.

The Pro-Line Treatment

What you will find in this Pro-Line 40th Anniversary K10 is a collection of upgrade components that aren’t found in the Basecamp (or any other SCX10 III, for that matter). This is where the collaboration between the two popular brands really takes off. Pro-Line includes its Big Bore Scaler Shocks in 90 to 95mm length for superior suspension-damping performance. These CNC-machined, aluminum-body shocks are equipped with dual-rate springs and feature an enlarged bore that allows for increased oil volume.

The K10 rolls on Pro-Line Rock Shooter CNC aluminum wheels, which feature a realistic-looking 12-hole design. The internal beadlock wheels bolt together from the back to keep the look nice, clean and scale. Mounted to the Rock Shooters is a set of Pro-Line Class 1 Hydrax tires and a set of Pro-Line foam inserts.

Pro-Line is famous for its tires, and we’re happy to see them included with this rig. Hyrax features an aggressive, open-tread pattern with each tread block containing multiple sipes for incredible tread flex. The included 1.9” Hydrax tires come in Pro-Line’s G8 compound, which is specifically designed for general rock crawling and provides great grip on a variety of surfaces—perfect for most terrain. With a heavy helping of Pro-Line’s upgrade parts, the crawler that started out as a “base model” truck quickly becomes fully loaded with a host of high-performance, high-quality aftermarket upgrades.

Pro-Line’s square-body stepside K10 is ultra-detailed and includes chrome-plated bumpers, multi-piece side mirrors, a faux brake light and a detailed grille with LED lighting that provides a super scale look. It comes painted from Pro-Line in a beautiful light metallic blue with Pro-Line graphics.

Celebrating Pro-Line’s Legacy in RC

Remember how we mentioned that this is a limited-run kit? That’s not hyped-up marketing speak. Only 1,982 pieces of this ready to run (RTR) are being made, making it one of the most limited examples of Axial crawlers to exist. There’s that number again, 1982. If its limited nature doesn’t get your collector’s blood flowing, let us point out that this SCX10 III also comes with an exclusive commemorative Pro-Line 40th Anniversary coin as well. The challenge coin’s face features Pro-Line’s 40th Anniversary logo along with graphics depicting the company’s iconic 1982 Champion tire as well as today’s Trencher tire, and the back of the coin displays Pro-Line’s logos from 1982, 2002 and 2022. This collector’s coin is said to be only available with this special release.

One The Trail

We loaded up a Spektrum 3S LiPo and headed out to our local trail to see how the K10 performs. Admittedly, since it’s such a collector’s piece, we didn’t get too rough-and-tumble with it and ran it on what we would consider to be “easier” trails. What we found out during out drive was that the K10 is every bit an Axial SCX10 III and then some.

LIMITED EDITION NUMBERING

Only 1,982 of this Pro-Line 40th Anniversary limited-edition crawler will be ever produced. To commemorate this, a special “P-L 40 Year” logo is laser-etched on the truck’s transmission plate and a unique production number is applied as well. Axial adds to this special RTR’s collector appeal by individually numbering each unit for maximum collectability. Which number will you receive? We’re clearly excited about the Pro-Line 40th Anniversary K10 because we believe it’s a fantastic tribute to the brand. A special collector’s coin is said to be only available with this special release.

Aside from its knockout looks, the SCX10 III is equipped with Axial’s robust portal axles that help the truck ride high to clear more trail obstacles. It is also equipped with Pro-Line’s famously competitive crawler tires, the Hydrax in the G8 compound. Combine those attributes with the host of other features, such as all metal links with metal pivot ball suspension setup, and what you get is a great-driving, easy-to-upgrade rig that Axial is known for.
