2013 Cactus Classic: Round Two Results

It was another long day at Scottsdale R/C Speedway, with 102 heats of racing completed in just about twelve hours. As temperatures dropped for the evening the ridiculous grip seemed to drop off very slightly – though the track may not have been quite as fast for a single lap, many drivers remarked that it actually got a bit easier to drive because the cars didn’t feel quite so edgy.

Team Associated’s Ryan Cavalieri backed up his first round TQ in Modified Stadium Truck by picking up over 1.5 seconds from the first round, eclipsing Jared Tebo by over three seconds to wrap up at least a tie for the overall TQ (which would be settled by combined laps and time for the two points-scoring rounds). Tebo improved from his 5th place finish in round one, as did Mike Truhe – his third place finish in Friday evening’s round was about 8 seconds faster than his first round, in which he scored eight points.

Team Durango’s Ryan Lutz outlasted the field in a crash-filled second round of Modified 2WD Short Course with the cleanest and most consistent run to take top honors for the round; it was much needed after a DNF Friday morning left him in the 20th spot. Ryan Cavalieri finished nearly five seconds behind, yet earned another 2nd place finish to back up the 2 points from the first round to hold down the overnight TQ. SoCal local and Kyosho driver Cody Turner was the surprise this time, improving 7 positions and picking up about 12 seconds from his first round to finish 3rd.

Ryan Lutz topped the Modified 4WD short course class the same way he grabbed the win in 2WD SC, capitalizing on a disastrous last lap from Billy Fischer to take the round win. The mistake dropped Fischer, who was in prime position to repeat his performance for the first round, down to third behind round one runner-up Dakotah Phend. With the three Team Durango drivers that were disqualified in the first round in the mix this time around, the overall results are sure to be a mess after the third round tomorrow.

The second round of Modified 2WD buggy was a preview of what could be very scary for the rest of the field in both 2WD and 4WD buggy classes if the track conditions stay the same for the remainder of the weekend: teenage Japanese sensation and multi-time 1/12-scale on-road World Champion Naoto Matsukura crushed everyone by five seconds with his mid-motor Yokomo B-Max2 and carries the TQ through Friday night. Englishman Lee Martin finished 2nd for the round with his Tamiya buggy equipped with an aftermarket mid-motor conversion, beating out former class National Champion Dustin Evans by two seconds. Evans has a lot of ground to make up, with a DNF in round one (in which he was 64th) leaving him outside the top 30 after Friday’s two rounds.

Just 1.3 seconds separated the top three in the second round of 4WD Modified, with Naoto Matsukura edging out Jared Tebo and the first round TQ Ryan Cavalieri to sweep the buggy classes on Friday evening. Joern Neumann wasn’t far behind, finishing just three seconds behind Cavalieri to back up his 2nd place finish in the first round. The biggest climb in round two? Team Durango’s Travis Amezcua, who was 15th in the first round and improved to 7th.
