2012 IFMAR Worlds Argentina – Saturday 1/8 and 1/4 Finals

With the final round of qualifying called for rain and the Friday lower mains run, Saturday morning kicked off the 1/8 and 1/4 mains at the 1/8 IFMAR Worlds in Argentina. While the crew and racers are on break for lunch, here’s a quick look at the guys that are working hard to make the bump to the big show

1/8 Main Odd
In the 1/8 Main Odd race it was Carsten Keller coming up from the 6th starting spot on the grid to take the win and first bump up slot. Behind Carsten the battle to bump was hard fought between Craig Laughton, Barry Pettit and Matt Castellano.

1/8 Main Even
1/8 Main Even was the first step in a long climb for current defending 1/8 world champ Cody King, 2006 1/8 champ Mark Pavidis and electric world champ Billy Easton. The frantic pace could be seen throughout the race as everyone scrambled to grab one of the coveted top 4 spots. At the end of 12 minutes it was Cody King followed by Easton, Neil Cragg and Jorn Neumann making it to the 1/4 finals.

1/4 Main Odd
To say this week has been a challenge for the racers could possibly be the understatement of the year. Qualifying was both difficult and fierce leaving names like Cavalieri, Drake and Phend landing in the 1/4 Mains to start off their run for the championship. At the start of the 1/4 Main Odd race, 1/4 A bump up Barry Pettit got a great start from the 10 spot up to 6th leading his charge to finish 2nd behind winner Ryan Cavalieri. Cav also get a great start jumping into the lead early and staying up front for the majority of the race to take the top spot for bumps. Adam Drake had a topsy turvy race bouncing from 3rd off the start down to 11th and then up to 3rd, down to 8th in the first 10 minutes before climbing his way back up to 3rd where he’d hang on for the last 10 minutes of the race. Renaud Savoya had a disastrous start from the pole falling all the way to 9th before managing to work his way back into that ever important last bump up slot.

1/4 Main Even
With his sites focus clear on making up for lost time (literally), defending champ Cody King ran a consistent 30 minutes climbing all the way from 10th on the grid. Dakotah Phend and Dylan Rodriguez battled the majority of the race for the top spot with Phend prevailing at the line with Rodriguez settling for the 2nd transfer spot heading into the semi-finals. Ryan Lutz also had a great race, taking the 3rd spot with Cody King finishing in the final bump up spot just 8 seconds behind Lutz.

The Semi-Finals will are just about to kick off from Argentina in just a few minutes, racers are poised to push hard to make the big show. Top 5 from the Semis will transfer to the Main with the rest of the field being set on times. In just hours from now we’ll have a new World Champion.
