Replica Build: 1987 Kyosho Ultima Worlds Winner

Joel Johnson is best known as an on-road driver, but he’s also an IFMAR World Champion in the 1/10 2WD Buggy class. In fact, this August marked the 30th anniversary of Joel’s 1987 Worlds win in Romsey, England. It was the first time IFMAR had separate classes for 2WD and 4WD buggies, and the 4WD winner should ring a bell–Masami Hirosaka, wheeling a Schumacher CAT XL. In this excellent article from our friends at DirtBurners.com, you’ll get an up-close look at a replica-build of Joel’s historic Kyosho Ultima. Lots more pics and info when you click, but sorry, no info on how to get a repro of that sweet satin jacket.

The legendary Joel Johnson, then and now. If you can fit into any of your clothes from 30 years ago besides your socks, good for you.

As you can see, 2WD buggies in 1987 looked exactly the same as they do now, except for pretty much everything.
