Traxxas Brings Titan 550 power to Stampede 4X4

Traxxas Brings Titan 550 power to Stampede 4X4

Traxxas popular Stampede 4X4 will soon be available in a brushed version that trims about $120 from the price of the brushless “VXL” model while preserving most of the features that made the Stampede 4X4 our “Truck of the Year” choice in 2011. The power system is Traxxas’ stalwart XL-5 speed control/Titan 550 motor combo, which should be good for a tick over 30mph when geared for speed.

With the body on, the only noticeable changes for the brushed model are the Chevron Maxx tires on chrome 2.8″ All-Star wheels (versus Talon treads on black-chrome All-Stars for the brushless VXL truck). If you really know your Stampede 4X4s, you’ll also note the VXL’s wheelie bar is also omitted.

The Stampede’s stance is unchanged from the VXL version–high and wide.

Body off, we see the same 4X4 platform as the VXL truck, with a few minor tweaks: the camber links are fixed-length plastic parts instead of the steel turnbuckles, and the tie rods are the smaller-diameter parts used on Traxxas’ other brushed models instead of the heavier-duty 4mm turnbuckles. The Stampede 4X4’s signature shock-guards are in place, and the plastic driveshaft that debuted with the Telluride serves here as well. All the electronic gear is waterproof and  bolted neatly into place. No tape!

At about $300, the Stampede 4X4 will run you $70 or so more than the 2WD model, making it a highly affordable way to go 4X4. We’re fans of the VXL model, and expect the brushed Stampede 4X4 to offer much of the same fun for significantly less dough. Look for a full review after Traxxas starts shipping in mid December.
