2013 Cactus Classic: Final Round of A-Main Results

Although three of the five classes had been wrapped up going into the third round of A-Main events there were still plenty of battles with implications for the overall. A cooling track surface and a slight breeze played a factor in every class, with some surprise winners in the final set of races between the weekend’s best.

Maifield Stadium Truck

Modified Stadium Truck came down to the final A-Main between Ryan Maifield and third qualifier Joern Neumann, the second and third qualifiers, who split the first two main events. Top Qualifier Cavalieri led the field into turns one and two…and that was it. A mistake right before the finish line let Maifield by on the inside, and that’s how the two circled the track for the remaining five minutes. Maifield crossed the stripe nearly two seconds ahead of his teammate, with Neumann in third.

Cavalieri 2WD SC

With just Ryan Maifield and Ryan Cavalieri in contention for the Modified 2WD Short Course championship, with one win each, the race came down to the third A-Main…and the dreaded triple jump. Maifield led for the first 9 laps before blowing over on the big gap, which let Cavalieri by for the lead while he waited for a turn marshal. Cavalieri crashed over the same jump on the following lap and let Maifield back to the front, but disaster struck two laps later in the same spot and Cavalieri got by for good. Maifield crashed again on the last lap and Dustin Evans got by for second.

Neumann 4WD SC

After two consecutive runner-up finishes to teammate Dakotah Phend, who wrapped up the title after A2, TLR’s Billy Fischer started the third A-Main with an extra gap back to third qualifier Ryan Lutz and Ryan’s Team Durango teammates (Phend’s second spot on the grid was appropriately left open). It lasted just one lap, as he tipped over after a rough landing and let all three by. Lutz led the way until running into a mechanical issue put Joern Neumann, who made a pass on teammate Hupo Honigl just two laps earlier, into the lead; the win in A3 tied Neumann and Fischer on points for second spot, but Fischer won the combined times tiebreaker by nearly three seconds.

Maifield Buggy

With Tebo sitting out from the second spot, TQ Naoto Matsukura enjoyed the same advantage over the Modified 2WD Buggy field that Billy Fischer did in the in 4WD Short Course; like Fischer, the sticky track surface (and a dose of bad luck) bit him early in the face (on just the second complete lap) and he was never a factor for the win; he faded to sixth by race end. Instead, Ryan Maifield grabbed the early lead and held it together for a close win with Lee Martin, Ryan Cavalieri, Steven Hartson, and Travis Amezcua all slugging it out – the top three were separated by just 2.1 seconds, and just ten seconds covered the top five!

Neumann 4WD Buggy

Ryan Maifield sat out the third A-Main in Modified 4WD, leaving the third spot open on the grid; the reduced pressure on the start let Joern Neumann focus on offense, rather than defense, and he was able to make a pass on Ryan Cavalieri before the halfway mark. After a disappointing run in 2WD, Naoto Matsukura was also on a mission: he dispatched Dakotah Phend on lap three and capitalized on a mistake from Cavalieri around the three minute mark before setting off in search of Neumann. Naoto set the fastest lap of the race once getting into second, and pulled within 1.1 seconds of Neumann before time ran out.
