Seeing Familiar Faces at a New Facility

Seeing Familiar Faces at a New Facility

Of the magnificent opportunities I’ve enjoyed through this hobby of racing radio control cars, visiting new tracks and meeting fellow hobbyists rank among my favorites. Last night was my first visit to SDRC Raceway in San Diego, CA, an incredible indoor facility less just 20 miles from my home, and I could barely sit still in the car on my way down Interstate 15; not only was I suffering from severe RC withdrawals (I hadn’t raced in over a week!), but I was anxious to see a mix of new faces and old friends.

My trek to SDRC took under 30 minutes. My TLR 22 stayed perched atop my hauler bag for less than two of those.

I got exactly what I came for; plenty of practice and a fun night of racing on a very tricky and entertaining layout. Luckily, my sense of humor overcame my impatience and I laughed my way through two qualifying rounds and a main event of crashing more than I’d like. Between runs I had a chance to chat with some old friends, many of which I hadn’t seen in ten years or more, and meet the next generation of local RC racers. I finished 3rd in Expert 2WD Modified and was happy with how much progress I made throughout the night; even though the racer in me wasn’t totally satisfied with my performance, I had a lot of fun.

Oh, and I handed out some stickers, too.

My first visit to SDRC was an imperialistic one. Here's local racer Darrin "Baldy" Rogers, among the many now rocking RC Car Action stickers.

If you’ve been holding off on visiting a new track in your area, give it a shot; you’ll never know how much fun you could be having. And if you’re in the San Diego area, come check out SDRC; I’ll see you there!
