Late Summer Reading & Movie Suggestions

Late Summer Reading & Movie Suggestions

As the racing season is winding down this fall, it can be difficult to go cold-turkey on RC racing.  For those of you who still have the racing itch and want to read a good book (you know…reading…books…they’re like magazines, only bigger) and watch a good movie, I have two suggestions for you.

Both of my suggestions are racing-inspired works of art, and they’re two of my favorites.

The first is “The Art of Racing In The Rain” by Garth Stein.

This book, narrated by a yellow lab named Enzo (after Enzo Ferrari) who believes he will be reincarnated as a man, tells the story of a professional racing driver, his family and the ways racing imitates life, and vice versa.  I’m unashamed to admit that this book is an emotional tear-jerker, at least if you have even an ounce of love for dogs.  An easy but fun and thought provoking book, “Racing In The Rain” is a must-read.  Stein has a deep appreciation for racing and for Ayrton Senna, who he references several times in the book.  Which leads me to my next suggestion…

“Senna” is a movie that’s currently in limited release–check out www.moviefone.com for a showing near you–and it’s a documentary film about arguably the greatest Formula One driver ever.  Like “Racing in The Rain,” this movie is enjoyable even if you’re not a racing nut, and if you are a gear head, you’ll gain a new appreciation for Ayrton Senna’s spectacular life.  This film showed at a tiny movie theater here in LA, so chances are if you live in a small town, you may have difficulty finding it.  Drive wherever necessary to see this film in theaters, as it’s worth every penny of gasoline you spend to get there and back.  The in-car footage from Senna’s races in the late 80’s and early 90’s will captivate you, and the politics and rivalries will keep you captivated until the very end.

So there you go–a great book and a great movie to check out as summer winds down.  If you’ve managed to find this blog, chances are you’re a racing fan and will likely enjoy both works.  I certainly did!
