The Traxxas Off-Road Championship (TORC) kicked off its 2011 season at the historic Red Bud MX park in Buchanan Michigan, where heavy rains soaked the track and added mud to the list of challenges for the trucks to overcome. Traxxas drivers Mark Jenkins, Andrew Caddell and CJ Greaves powered through the difficult track conditions to take the podium in the Pro 4X4, Pro Light, and Super Buggy classes.
2010 TORC Super Buggy Champion CJ Greaves was the first Traxxas driver to take the track at Red Bud MX as the Super Buggy class rolled onto the starting line. The thick mud wreaked havoc with the open-wheeled buggies, but CJ kept his Traxxas Super Buggu on the track and on all four tires to earn his first podium of the season with a third-place finish behind Herman Barnum and John Frana.
Traxxas Pro Light
With no fewer than 16 trucks racing in the Traxxas Pro Light class, making the podium meant battling through a full field of competitors as well as conquering the mud. In Round 1 racing, Traxxas driver Andrew Caddell chased Brad Lovell, Randy Eller and Ross Hoek for podium position, but spun out and fell to the back of the field. CJ Greaves, making his TORC Pro Light debut, charged to sixth place before finishing eighth. Newcomer Samuel Hübinette was the star of the show and put his experience as a drift-car champion, touring car racer, and Hollywood stunt driver to work as he raced from 16th position all the way to the win in his Mopar-powered Ram Truck, built and crewed by Jenkins Brothers Racing.
On Sunday, Round 2 of Traxxas Pro Light saw Traxxas’ CJ Greaves lead much of the race, but Hübinette was able get around Greaves to take his second win in as many races. Greaves held onto second place and was joined on the podium by Traxxas’ Andrew Caddell, who was racing to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In addition to their TORC trophy plaques, Hübinette, Greaves, and Caddell earned Traxxas Pro Light contingency payouts. The top spot on the podium for each race pays $5,000, while second and third earn $2,500 and $1,500 respectively. Even drivers who don’t make it to the podium stand to earn dollars, with payouts all the way to tenth place. Hübinette and Greaves also collected an extra $1,000 when they posted the fastest laps in Round 1 and 2 to earn the Traxxas Maxx Lap award.
The Pro 4X4 class raced for the first time of the 2011 season on Sunday, after heavy rains cancelled the Pro 4X4 event on Saturday. Traxxas/Amsoil/BFGoodrich driver Mark Jenkins took over the top spot early in the race after leader Johnny Greaves overshot the track’s massive step-up jump. A red flag due to a crash bunched the field behind Jenkins, putting Scott Douglas and Rick Johnson squarely on his bumper. When the green flag unleashed the field, Jenkins held off both multi-time champions until a bobble let Douglas and Johnson past. Undaunted, Mark held onto third for the remainder of the race to take his first podium of the 2011 season.
The TORC season continues at Crandon International Raceway, June 18 & 19. Follow the action at each TORC race at Traxxas.com!
