San Diego, CA: After winning the first three races of the season and finishing second in Round 4, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Traxxas rider Jake Weimer once again put himself on the top step of the Monster Energy Supercross podium. A win for the hard-charging Weimer is not a surprise, but the muddy conditions at Qualcomm Stadium did have fans wondering if Weimer, who has said, “mud is not my bud” in the past, would be slowed down by the treacherous conditions. Any concerns were laid to rest as Weimer holeshotted his heat race and quickly gapped the field, stretching his lead to more than five seconds by the end of the 6-lap qualifier. In addition to guaranteeing a prime spot on the gate for the Main, the win marked Weimer’s fifth consecutive heat-race win. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Traxxas teammate Josh Hansen finished third, putting both Traxxas-sponsored riders in the spotlight for the Main Event.

When the Speed cameras asked what it would take to win the Main, Weimer was unequivocal. “Patience is going to be key tonight. It’s really slick and it’s really rutty, so it’s going to be important to be patient.” Weimer proved his cool as the gate dropped, riding aggressively to the front but choosing to stay on two wheels rather than risk a slide as he slotted into second place behind Round 4 winner Trey Canard. As the rivals raced through the rhythm section on lap one, the gap between Weimer and Canard shrank each time Weimer launched his KX®250F. A clean inside pass for the lead was imminent, but it became that much easier for Weimer to move into the top spot as Canard mis-timed the final jump and was bucked off his Honda. Weimer bolted into the lead as Canard struggled to right his bike, but the tangle of riders that formed around Canard and his downed machine collected Traxxas rider Josh Hansen, who found himself in the back of the field as he wrestled his Kawasaki out of the Tuff Blocks. Weimer took advantage of the roost-free view from the front and instantly put a two-second gap on the field, which stretched to just over three seconds as Weimer sailed past the checkered flag 13 laps later. Teammate Josh Hansen battled all the way back to tenth after the mayhem around Canard’s crash.

Weimer was typically understated in the post-race interview. “I prepared really hard this year, and I just decided, ‘I want to win.’ I’m confident in what I’m doing, and I don’t feel I rode real great tonight, but I was just kind of ‘steady-Eddy’ and didn’t make a lot of mistakes.” Weimer went on to thank his team and sponsors, including Traxxas, for their support. With his latest win, Jake Weimer has extended his points lead to 26 points over Trey Canard, with 122 and 96 points respectively. Traxxas congratulates Jake on his victory, and salutes Josh Hansen’s never-quit attitude.
