The 2010 season has started off awesome. I have switched back to the Associated RC8B buggy and the results are finally starting to show. I have ran 3 races so far in 2010 and have had a good showing at each race.
This past weekend I traveled to Columbus, OH for the 2010 Midwest Winter Champs Race. I showed up on Thursday morning to be greeted with an awesome track I was ready to go. I signed up for the Sportsman 1/8 Buggy class with hopes of making a good showing for all my sponsors and maybe making it into the A Main. There were 41 entries in the Sportsman class and I knew I would have my work cut out for me to make the A.
Thursday and Friday practice was very hectic and track time was not very easy to come by. I tried a couple different setups through practice and finally found one that was good in the morning when there was some moisture and late in the day when it was dried out.
Saturday came around and I was ready to go for the quals. I started the day off good and put myself 3rd in the A after the first qualifier and I knew after that round that I would have a good shot at making it into the A main. After the second qualifier I did not improve on my time and it dropped me back to 5th spot but I was still in the show. The track slowed down a lot come the third qualifier and I ended up qualifying 5th in the A main. I was very happy to be in the show and knew that the Main on Sunday was 30 minutes and I had to be on my game the whole time.
Sunday rolled around and it was time for the A Main. When the main started I got a good jump but got tangled up in the second turn and was the last to get marshaled so I dropped back to 11th spot and by the 4th lap I was already a lap down to the leader. I was a little upset but I kept it together and started charging through the field slowly making my way into the top five. I got past the leader when he was in for fuel to get my lap back and I knew my car was on rails all I had to do was stay calm. At the 10 minute mark I had gotten my lap back and had worked my way up to 4th but still had a lot of time to make up. I just kept pushing and I could hear the announcer calling my name so I knew I was charging towards the front. At the 15 minute mark I finally caught the leaders and ran with them for a few laps just waiting for them to make a mistake for me to capitalize and sure enough about the 18 minute mark 1st and 2nd got together allowing me to take over the lead. I came in for fuel at the 22 minute mark with the lead and held it as 2nd pitted at the same time. I just kept pushing and started turning really fast laps and started to pull away. At the 28 minute mark I had about a 20 second lead so I started to slow down a little and it almost cost me as I got tangled with some lappers but was able to stay out front. Once I cleared traffic it was clear sailing from there and I ended up winning by 15 seconds and was on the top spot of the podium.
My AKA SS Gridirons were awesome all weekend and after the 30 minute main they looked great and still had a lot of life left in them. I ran the same Answer clutch shoes and springs all weekend and they never missed a beat. The cold fusion fuel kept my engine running cool and had plenty of power all weekend. The Dialed bags got me to the track in style and my Fastlane Wrap looked awesome going around the track.
